Living So Your Life Matters

Guest Post by Grammy Nominated, Dove Award Winning Music Producer, studio singer and songwriter –  Chance Scoggins


Last week, I had a 3-hour layover in the Denver airport. After I grabbed some lunch, I settled in at my gate to catch up on some email. As I looked down at my computer, I saw a folded sheet of paper on the floor underneath my chair. At first, I ignored it. But each time I looked back down, there it was again, staring at me. I saw two columns written in small, blocky handwriting, but I couldn’t make out the words. Eventually, curiosity got the best of me and I bent down to pick it up.

I was shocked and made better by what I read.

The column on the left was a To-Do List. Each task had been crossed off, except for the last.

Write thank you notes. 

Call florist.

Pack suit.

Get music to someone.

On the right, in capital letters and underlined were the words, JOHN’S LEGACY.  Beneath it, a few bullet points.

– Family man

– Good friend (First to help)

– Hard worker

– Strong faith

– Baseball Coach (“Finish well, boys!”)

I soon realized it was an outline for a funeral service. The person who wrote it was probably giving the eulogy.

Holding the summary of his life in my hand, I suddenly felt protective over John as if the list were about me or someone I love.  I was insulted.  The thought of an entire life being reduced to so few words made my stomach turn. And these non-descript, common phrases like “family man” and “hard worker” didn’t seem dignified enough to honor a life well-lived.  Surely there was more to him. There must be a better way to describe him than “good friend” or “Coach”.

Then I heard from somewhere inside of me – 

Not if you’re a player on his team.

Not if you’re the friend he helped when you needed him most.

At first glance, it seemed like the list could have described lots of men. But it didn’t. It describedJohn.

…who loved his family more than anything else in the world.

…who was the first in line to help someone in need.

…whose work ethic set the standard, encouraging everyone around him to do more – and do it all the way.

…whose faith was a beacon.

John…who taught his players how to finish well.

One of my favorite quotes is from Harold Kushner.  It says, “Our souls are not hungry for fame, comfort, wealth, or power. Our souls are hungry for meaning, for the sense that we have figured out how to live so that our lives matter, so that the world will be at least a little bit different for our having passed through it.”

I used to think a legacy was built of grand moments and great accomplishments.  And when I considered all the forgotten history behind us, it seemed it was only reserved for those who shaped the world in profound ways.

But now I see the truth.

We’re all shaping the world profoundly – in ways we can see and ways we can’t begin to imagine. We don’t define our legacy in one moment of glory. We build it every day – through our most daring acts and even what we might consider to be mundane.   


Legacy isn’t about an ultimate gift you’ll someday give the world. It’s about everything you give the world. It won’t be written about you someday in the future. You’re writing it now.

That’s why it matters that you got out of bed this morning,

And that you give your best to the work of your hands.

That’s why it matters when you’re kind to a stranger,

And quick to help a friend,

That you love well.

John got it right. In the end, it’s not about a pile of cash, a fat rolodex or your picture on a wall.  It’s about changing your corner of the world…and hopefully teaching someone how to finish well in the process.

Your fingerprints are all over the world around you – offering perspective that only you can, healing hurts that only you can, shaping the future as only you can.

Immeasurably More


Ephesians 3:20

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,”

I love the word “immeasurably” – too large to measure! That is our God! He is able to do more than we could ever think or imagine because He is the bomb like that!

I think we underestimate God way too much.  We put Him in our mind like He is a human.  Humans fall short, humans fail, humans let each other down.  God is not a flawed human – He’s a PERFECT God and He loves you beyond what you could ever imagine.

Today when you’re praying keep in mind that God can do immeasurably more than you could ever ask – pray with faith that’s really ‘OUT THERE’ … the kind of faith that makes people think you’re a weirdo … God likes that kind of faith – it can move mountains.

Everyone of us has had to face rejection at some point in our lives. It is one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. It’s deep and it can cause the destruction of healthy self esteem, peace in relationships, peace with God, and progress in life. The root of rejection doesn’t come from the way you have been treated, it comes from a mistaken identity. When we know who we are in Christ, we can be set free from this.
Here are some signs that you are struggling with rejection – it could be social, family, perceived, or self rejection..:
  • Rebellious actions, attitudes
  • Fabricated personalities (being somebody you aren’t, in order to be accepted)
  • The tendency to reject others, so that you aren’t the first one to be rejected
  • A tendency to always wonder if a person rejects or accepts you
  • The need to fit in or be accepted by others and be a part of everything
  • Self-pity where a person feels bad for themselves being all alone
  • Inability to be corrected or receive constructive criticism
  • Rejection creates an environment where you are starved for love or just don’t fit in
  • A tendency to blame God (“Why did He give me this big nose? Why did God make me so short?”)
  • A sense of pride that says, “How dare they reject me!”
  • Opinionated personality and the need to be right about things
  • Feelings of worthlessness, insecurity, or hopelessness
  • Seeking a parent’s approval is a sign that your basing your identity upon what they think of you
  • Envy, jealousy, and even hate can be rooted in rejection
  • Fear of confrontation (because your identity is based upon what they think of you)… 
If you or someone you know is displaying these signs—its time to make a decision to evaluate your heart and make peace with yourself and God.. Find out who He says you are in His word..spend time with Him and let Him shape your view of yourself and others. Help those around you struggling by giving love and being Jesus to them.

Climb Out


Today I was thinking about how we so often blame others for where we are in our lives.  Someone doubted us or hurt us … someone stole our blessing or emotionally abandoned us…etc.

So we fold our arms, turn our nose to the air, plop down in a chair and do nothing.

That sounds like a fun life, right?

No way!  I’m not trying to belittle your circumstances or hurts that others have brought to you.  That sucks! I know how it feels to be hurt and for dreams to be shattered because of someone who doesn’t believe in you.  I’m just saying how long do we sit in the corner and cry about it?

I feel like I’m being a little harsh so let me back up –

Do you ever find yourself in the bottom of a pit? I know I have before.  It’s our final destination after this world has chewed us up and spit (spat … excuse my grammar) us out.  The pit is dark, cold, lonely, and just flat out depressing.  While we sit in the pit guess where our mockers are?  They are living life! So why should you sit in that pit one more second?

Although people or circumstances have dropped you into the pit, only YOU can let yourself out.  You are the one holding YOURSELF captive in the pit.  Come on out of there and start living again!

How about this – take a moment and look around in the pit.  It’s empty.  All it has is you.  The pit is an empty dwelling place for you.  You allow yourself to stay the night there but then you wonder why your world is gray and why negativity is surrounding you.  

Change your perspective and come up out of there right this minute!

Climb! You’ve never noticed before but there is a ladder along side the wall of the pit.  Stand up and climb out.  Take a deep breath, forgive those who have wronged you, and take a step back into the light.

Remember  – you have to make an effort.  No one can do it for you.  You have to let yourself out.

My Dream Last Night: A visitation by the enemy himself



Can I be real with you all? My husband and I got into a small spat last night. The usual, marriage, every now and then dispute. So, I went to bed mad. I snatched the covers and rolled over to the other side. How dare he not “die to himself.” It’s so ironic that we can know that the bible says “not to go to bed angry” AND while I was focusing on what my HUSBAND needed to do to “change”– I totally ignored what I could change– which was ME. 

Nonetheless, we got into a small spat. I woke up at about 2:30am to check on a sleeping Logan (my son) and I remembered our spat and I was mad! How dare he! As I meditated on how my husband made me mad, I drifted off to sleep, I had one of the most powerful, unforgettable dreams. This dream was so real and not only was it REAL but God interpreted the dream for me as I was sleeping. God rarely speaks to me through dreams, but at times, He does. I didn’t even realize that this particular thing was happening but I believe that it will change your life the way it changed mine.

This was the dream:

Out of nowhere, I saw a demon. Its face was completely disfigured. It was short and it looked like a mix of a gremlin and an alien. As I looked at the demon, it said that it was the “marriage demon.” And that little demon was laughing at me. I recall turning to the Lord in the dream and asking Him what does that mean?” He said, This is the marriage demon, it’s purposed to destroy marriage. There are demons on this earth that are assigned to DESTROY certain areas in your life. There’s demons that attack your faith, trust in God, your single life, your children, your family, your mind, your very SOUL and every other area of your life. It’s exactly what they do, try to destroy it.”

I woke up SHOCKED!! You mean to tell me that I got this little demon running around my house trying to ruin my marriage and I am LETTING IT??? I actually got MAD at it!! I am letting some fallen angel and my PRIDE tell me to go to sleep angry?? Ohhhhhh, no! NOT on my watch and NOT in my house! I turned to my husband and repented so quickly!! Minutes later, all was well. A total misunderstanding. The crazy thing about that test was that it was so REAL. I blamed my husband without actually looking at myself and seeing what I could have done differently.

Then, I began to look over my life and I said, GOD– when I moved to NYC for the first time and stepped out on faith, I got hit with so many tests and it was PLAIN hard. I look back and I was being attacked by a particular demon that was trying to get me trust in IT instead of trusting in the living God. I believe that after we pass that test over and over again– then that demon leaves. This goes for every season in your life! When you’re a child, there’s a demon attempting to place seeds in your mind that grow and try to destroy you as an adult!

Ok, you may say– HEATHER, where is this biblical?! You’re freakin’ me out.
Let me show you what I found:

Ephesians 6:12 
For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places

Job 1:6-12
God and ‘the satan’ have the following exchange.
One day the heavenly beings came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan answered the Lord, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” The Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil.” Then Satan answered the Lord, “Does Job fear God for nothing? Have you not put a fence around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But stretch out your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will curse you to your face.” The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, all that he has is in your power; only do not stretch out your hand against him!” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

1 Peter 5:8
Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

Luke 4:13
When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him until the next opportunity came.

So what does this tell me? That satan WAITS for another opportunity to attack you!! As soon as you STEP out on FAITH, GET ENGAGED, DECIDE THAT YOU’RE GOING TO TRUST GOD or whatever else, it’s an opportunity for satan to come in & TEST YOU! Satan and his little demons have ruined marriages, relationships and whatever else all in the name of another PERSON. And HE keeps slipping BY and nobody is recognizing the part that he played!

Where do you think 1/3 of the angels went that got kicked out of heaven? They’re with satan– taking HIS assignments on this earth & instructions! THIS is why when you begin to live for Jesus, you get HIT up with attacks! Satan now sees you as a threat because you no longer live for him and you NOW live for Jesus!!

Are you getting this??? THIS is the reason your friendships, job, money, marriage, emotions and everything is getting attacked! It’s a SET-UP!!!! SATAN IS TRYING TO WIPE YOU OUT!! He doesn’t care about you! He wants you OUT of the way!! THIS is why it’s so important for you to PRAY, PRAY, PRAY and keep praying! Keeping the presence of Christ in your heart, prepares you for each attack. It renews your mind & you refuse to entertain satan’s lies.

Ok, so as you can see in Job that GOD allows these temptations to come! Praise God that when you pass them, you GROW up and you mature.

Romans 5:3
Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings and tests, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.

Are you seeing this? Now that I saw that little marriage demon that was trying to destroy my marriage last night, I REFUSE to entertain him! I ain’t entertaining no little fallen angel that has ZERO power and authority over me!

God promises that HE will be with me and that I won’t be tempted beyond I can handle and that HE will give me a way OUT. (1 Cor 10:13)

Are you taking the way out?? Or are you giving into all of these temptations as satan and his little friends are laughing at you?

You choose. 

THERE are demons ASSIGNED to ruin your life. Don’t LET them.

And, for clarity– if there’s sin that you pursue and then, you welcome 7 other demons more evil than itself to enter your body.(matthew 12:43-45) Are you opening the door to satan with your LIFE? Are you freely letting him come in & life in your heart? If so, then, it’s time to close that door and give your entire heart to Christ. Repent and turn from your sins! God is calling you back to HIM!

For He, Himself, is our peace


Ephesians 2:14 says “for He (Jesus), Himself is our peace.”

I believe that any time we are struggling with peace in our lives we have to check our hearts to see where we have placed Jesus.  I guarantee you that if you are feeling empty and missing the peace that once ruled your life, you have probably asked Jesus to move over from the pilot seat and you took over (or so you think).

Don’t we just seem to get in the way … a lot?!?!  I know I do!

Philippians 4:7 “…and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts  and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Jehovah Shalom, one of the many names of the Lord,  means The Lord our Peace. (Judges 6:22-24)

I loved studying in Ephesians over the past few weeks.  I would find myself completely stuck on one sentence for days but specifically about peace.

This world is filled with messy people because they are searching for peace.  People stir up problems, start drama, dig up old issues, etc … because they are searching for peace but instead of submitting their lives to Christ – they search on… and they will continue searching.

On the other hand – Believers are searching as well.  I had a conversation the other day about how heart breaking it is that Believers live in bondage themselves.  That’s pretty hindering when you see a Christ professing individual living in bondage.  It’s completely contradictory.  How can we help others when we’re sinking ourselves?

I’m not trying to hit you over the head with the “hard stuff” tonight but I just want to shake some folks around and plead with them to STOP giving the enemy so much credit and stop giving him a foothold in their lives! 

I truly believe some people don’t want the peace.  They say they do but they don’t know how to accept it and live in it!  

We make this walk with Jesus so much harder than it should be.  **Raises hand** I can attest to that myself because I have a tendency to make it hard too.

We’re in need of the basics … so tonight, let’s start over with peace.  To have peace is to know Jesus and that’s really all we need, right?
